Tokyo turned a 48-storey skyscraper into a Pokémon card

Pokémon Card Game TOKYO LUMINOUS NIGHT projection on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

A reel of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is doing the rounds again this week, and if you have not seen it, watch it before you read on. The twin towers in Shinjuku, 48 storeys of grey government concrete, become a Pokémon card. Not a screen. The whole east face of Tower One, lit edge to edge with card art, attacks and animation, with the Shinjuku skyline as the frame.

What it is

The show is called Pokémon Card Game TOKYO LUMINOUS NIGHT, Celebrating 30 Years. It premiered on 20 March 2026 as part of Tokyo's TOKYO Night & Light project, on a building that already holds the Guinness World Record for the largest permanent architectural projection-mapped display. Since then it has run on Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese national holidays at 6:30, 7:30 and 9:00 PM Tokyo time, and it is free to watch from the Citizens' Plaza below, ten minutes from Shinjuku Station.

The sequence mixes classic cards from the first sets with current releases, brought to life at building scale: attacks firing across the tower, card frames sliding and stacking, Pikachu and the starters drawn in the art styles collectors know from the cards themselves. It is the card game, not the video games or the anime, that got the biggest canvas in the city.

Why it matters

Thirty years in, The Pokémon Company keeps choosing the card as the symbol of the franchise. The Sphere in Las Vegas got a Poké Ball last week; Tokyo got the cards. That is the same message we see at the counter every weekend: the trading card game is the front door to Pokémon now, for kids opening their first pack and for adults chasing the art they grew up with.

Every one of these moments sends a wave into the hobby. The 30th Celebration line is what that wave asks for first, and it is on our shelves in Wellington and online today. The Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box is already gone; the standard ETB, the Sylveon ex and Greninja ex boxes, the Poster Collection and the Knock Out Collection are still here.

Talk about it with us in the Triad Discord. Which card would you put on a skyscraper?
