Pokémon just took over the Las Vegas Sphere

The Las Vegas Sphere lit as a Poké Ball, then showing Charizard, September 2026

For years the joke was that the Sphere in Las Vegas was built to be a Poké Ball. On the night of 15 September it finally was one. The Pokémon Company lit up the entire Exosphere, all 580,000 square feet of it, as a red-and-white Poké Ball, and then the ball opened into a full animated sequence: Mew drifting through a dream world, Charizard tearing across a fire-lit valley, Snorlax asleep on the Strip, and Spheal rolling over the whole building.

What it actually was

Officially, the takeover was an activation for Pokémon Sleep, the mobile game that tracks how you sleep and matches Pokémon to your night. That is why Mew leads the sequence and why the scenes feel like a dream instead of a battle. The Pokémon Company has not badged it as part of the 30th anniversary campaign. It does not need to. Pokémon turned 30 on 27 February 2026, and putting a Poké Ball on the most-photographed screen on the planet in that same year says everything the anniversary campaign has been saying since PokéPark Kanto opened in Tokyo and the 30th Celebration set hit shelves.

Why it matters for collectors

Moments like this move the hobby. Every time Pokémon does something this visible, a wave of people who have not opened a pack in ten years walks into a card shop that week, and the products that carry the anniversary branding are the first thing they ask for. The 30th Celebration line is still on our shelves today: the Elite Trainer Box, the Sylveon ex and Greninja ex boxes, the Poster Collection and the Knock Out Collection. The Pokémon Center version of the ETB is already gone. If you have been waiting on the 30th Celebration ETB, this is the week to stop waiting.

Watch the best cuts

The official video runs the whole sequence from the Poké Ball reveal to Spheal taking over the building. The Charizard pass near the middle is the shot everyone is sharing, and the Mew opening is the one to show anyone who says Pokémon is just for kids.

Come talk about it with us in the Triad Discord, where the Pokémon channel has been arguing about which Pokémon deserved the Sphere next, and grab your 30th Celebration product below or in the Wellington store before this wave clears it out.
